Before the birth

• childbirth preparation information, although I recommend that a mother and her partner take a childbirth preparation course.
• assistance in preparing a birth plan and discussing possible birth situations.
• discussion of individual concerns, hopes, preferences, fears, and strategies.

• continuous emotional, physical, and informational support.

• care until the mother and baby are settled and comfortable.
• assistance initiating breastfeeding.
• follow-up care to ensure all family needs are being met.
